Working student contract
A working student contract is a special form of employment contract. A so-called working student contract is concluded when a future employee is a student.
Requirements for a working student
The student must fulfill certain requirements in order to be employed as a working student and not as a student assistant:
- Enrolled as a regular student at a university, college or recognized university of applied sciences
- may not study for more than 25 semesters
- is not in a semester of leave
- must still complete prescribed examinations
- may work a maximum of 20 hours a week during the lecture period
- can work more than 20 hours for a maximum of 26 weeks per year
If a student does not work as a mini-jobber, the working student contract is usually used. The advantage of this is that the working student earns more than €450 per month.
If the student status changes, the student is obliged to notify the Human Resources Department immediately.

Why is this contract important?
Thanks to the contract, the working student and the company have created a solid basis for the employment relationship. All rights and obligations for the employer and employee are summarized in the contract. Should any disagreements arise, both parties have this contract to refer to.
When does this contract end?
There are various ways in which the employment relationship can be terminated. For example, the employment relationship may end due to a fixed term. This can be the case, for example, if the employee’s student status ends, but also following dismissal.
If the contract ends due to termination, various notice periods apply. You can find more information on the subject of notice periods in our related article.
How often can a working student contract be extended?
As a general rule, the number of extensions depends on the reason for the fixed term. In addition, a fixed-term employment contract may generally be extended a maximum of 3 times. This rule also applies here.
