Midijob
A midi job is an employment relationship with pay in the range of € 450.01 and € 1300 per month. Since July 1, 2019, this area is no longer called the sliding zone, but employment in the transitional area.
What is a midi job?
A midi job is more or less a hybrid in the low-wage sector. The term “midi” is derived from the English word “middle”. A midi job is something between a mini-job and regular part-time employment. This means that it is a hybrid.
It is also worth noting that any one-off payments such as vacation or Christmas bonuses are included in gross pay.
The payment
There are some differences between mini-jobs and midi-jobs in terms of pay, social insurance, gross pay and taxes.
The mini-job:
- The payment is a maximum of 450 € per month
- Exemption from pension contributions possible
- Gross = Net
- Tax free
The midi job:
- The pay is between 450 € & 1300 € per month
- Contributions to all social insurance schemes
- Gross minus taxes
- Regular taxation of income
Even with a mini-job, the daily number of 8 working hours may not be exceeded.
These are the advantages of a midi job
This type of employment has a number of advantages.
1. secondary employment
There is also the option of working a mini-job as an additional income. Here you can earn up to €5,400 per year on the side, without having to pay taxes and social security contributions.
2. unemployment insurance
A midi-jobber is entitled to unemployment benefit. If the employee has worked for 12 consecutive months, they are entitled to 60% of their average net earnings. If the employee has children, they are entitled to 67%.
3. health & long-term care insurance
Midijobbers are covered by both health and long-term care insurance at low contributions. They receive the full benefit. In addition, the employee is entitled to continued payment of wages even in the event of long-term illness.
4. full pension entitlement
Although a midi-jobber pays low employee contributions to social insurance, he or she still acquires the full pension entitlement.
5. taxes
Income tax is only paid for a midi job in certain cases. The decisive factor here is whether the job is your main or secondary occupation. The tax class also plays a decisive role. If someone is registered in tax classes I to IV, they do not have to pay income tax. In the two tax classes V and VI, income tax is due.
