Staff appraisal
The appraisal interview is a discussion between a manager and a team member. It serves as an instrument of employee management, often focusing on the employee’s performance and behavior.
The appraisal interview
It can include praise and recognition, but also criticism or even a warning.
Even the word “appraisal interview” usually doesn’t give rise to good expectations, so many employees go into the interview with a queasy feeling.
It is important that such a meeting does not take place immediately, but preferably about 2 weeks in advance. This allows both sides to prepare for the meeting.
The reasons
Such a conversation can take place for the following reasons:
- Evaluate work performance
- Request feedback on behavior
- certain instructions were not followed
- introduce new work instructions

The following matters can therefore be discussed in a staff appraisal:
- Changes to the employment contract
- New rules of cooperation
- Conflicts with colleagues, customers or the boss
- Changes to working hours or place of work
- New operating procedures
- Discuss re-entry
- Going through development perspectives
Here it becomes clear that an appraisal interview does not always have to be negative.
Types of staff appraisals
As described above, there are different reasons for such a conversation. However, they can also be divided into different types.

The institutionalized appraisal interview
These meetings are held at regular intervals within the company. These meetings include the following:
- Performance reviews
- Feedback discussions
- Personnel development meetings
An ad hoc appraisal interview
As the name suggests, these conversations have a specific occasion which is discussed.
- Conflict discussions
- Project-related discussions
- Discuss new working conditions
- Discussions after prolonged illness / incapacity to work
