Generation Y
Generation Y is also known as millennials. This is the generation born between the early 1980s and the late 1990s. The term Millennials is based on the fact that this generation was born around the turn of the millennium.
What defines Generation Y
The representatives of Generation Y have grown up with smartphones. They experienced a childhood without cell phones and yet they know the time of the first smartphones. They are young in their jobs and think about starting their own family relatively “late” (in their early/mid-30s).
This generation wants to settle down. Aspects such as getting married and buying their own property are playing an increasingly important role. The job is particularly important to Generation Y, because it should be fun.
In general, this generation is also characterized by its questioning character. This can also be traced back to the name, as the Y is pronounced like the English word “why” and means “why”.
The world of work
The members of Gen Y bring some new demands to the world of work and this is changing it.
Millennials have a lot of potential due to their high level of education and their knowledge of the internet, media and new technologies. As there are fewer people in this age group, skilled workers are in short supply and there are a number of vacancies to fill.
As millennials know that the demand for them is high, the expectations of a new company are usually correspondingly high. This often leads to a veritable war of talent, as every employer wants to find the right specialists for their company.
